Pro Bono: Law Related Education

Indiana University Maurer School of Law-Bloomington

Using a contribution from Baker & Daniels to create two Pro Bono Fellowships, the Maurer School of Law has turned its existing pro bono program into a cohesive program with greater institutional support. The program, now called the Access to Justice Program, coordinates the current pro bono component and is expanding to meet the needs of students interested in working in the public interest area after graduation.

Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis

Baker & Daniels has sponsored two Public Interest Fellowships through the Clinical Programs of the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. The Fellows developed a forum and conference to address Indiana's mortgage foreclosure issues and expanded the scope of the Criminal Defense Clinic, developing a Wrongful Convictions Clinic that allows students to develop  skills to advocate for those wrongfully convicted.

University of Notre Dame Law School

Baker & Daniels' pro bono collaboration with the University of Notre Dame Law School has resulted in the creation of five separate student pro bono initiatives over the past year. A recognition event at the end of the Spring 2009 semester celebrated the creation of the program and completion of a full year of initiatives. The law school plans to develop more initiatives in the year ahead.

We the People: The Citizen & the Constitution Education Project

Baker & Daniels lawyers prepare students of Indiana's high school state champion for the We the People national competition in Washington, D.C. Students come to Baker & Daniels in Indianapolis for a day-long dress rehearsal with firm lawyers serving as judges in "testifying" before a panel of judges, helping students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles.

Street Law Corporate Diversity Pipeline Education Project

Baker & Daniels' collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company's corporate legal department is underway to co-teach a civil law course at Shortridge Law & Public Policy Magnet School in Indianapolis. Teams of corporate lawyers match up with corporate legal departments and volunteer weekly to teach civil law classes that the Street Law Corporate Diversity Pipeline designs.
